He argued that, because of both their prevailing weakness and their special relationship with God, there could be no higher calling for men than to devote themselves to the religious service of women as priests and spiritual counsellors. This led Arbrissel to revive an old Christian model, the double-monastery for both men and women, when he and his followers established their own community at Fontevraud in 1101.
